LYOCELL

LYOCELL

Lyocell is made from the natural substance cellulose (the cellulose fiber), but is artificially processed. Therefore, like viscose, it is one of the natural cellulosic chemical fibers.

Sustainable, skin-friendly Lyocell

Lyocell requires 10 to 20 times less water to produce than cotton. If you compare the area under cultivation, the yield per area is also ten times higher than for cotton

THE ORIGIN OF LYOCELL

The cellulose fibers required for the production of Lyocell come from Asian eucalyptus wood, which is produced sustainably and involves a so-called production cycle. Since the 1990s, the miracle fiber has been used as a material for the textile industry.

LYOCELL IN DIFFERENT QUALITIES

Lyocell is mainly sold under the brand name Tencel. There are also different fiber thicknesses, regardless of the quality. This means that Lyocell can be used in many areas such as clothing, duvets, mattress protectors or quilted goods.

HOW IS LYOCELL MADE?

For production, small pieces are cut from the eucalyptus wood, which are then soaked in a solution of amine oxides to dissolve the cellulose. The cellulose is pressed through spinnerets in the form of a clear spinning solution and collected as continuous fibers in a spinning bath. These fibers can then be spun into a yarn or further treated. A major advantage of this process is that the solvent used is almost completely recycled. Since this can be washed out of the fiber and recycled, the production of Lyocell is considered environmentally friendly.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO WASH LYOCELL?

Lyocell is an extremely easy-care material. Unless the care label recommends otherwise, clothing made from Lyocell can be machine washed at up to 60 degrees. Since Lyocell can be tumble dried, cleaning and caring for this material is particularly easy.

THE SPECIAL FEATURES OF LYOCELL

Lyocell has numerous properties that make it a popular material in the textile industry:

• Lyocell is 100 percent biodegradable. • The smooth, soft surface ensures that the fabric feels pleasant on the skin. • Lyocell regulates temperature. • It is anti-allergenic and resistant to mites and bacteria - this makes Lyocell the ideal fabric for people who are allergic to house dust. • It is characterized by its tear resistance and durability. • Lyocell can be easily combined with natural fibers such as cotton: This means you benefit from the advantages of the cellulosic chemical fiber and those of the natural fiber. • Since Lyocell is breathable and absorbent, it is also ideal for sportswear and bedding.
